A 60-foot cruising yacht

RocinanteEvery sheet, dial, door & vent alive

Named for Don Quixote's horse, Rocinante is a fully scripted sailing yacht — a smooth glide sailing engine, autopilot, live instruments, a cabin full of moving parts, and a brushed-steel Sail HUD to drive her with a click.

At a Glance

A proper cruising yacht, properly alive

Rocinante is built on the well-loved BWind sailing engine, rebuilt from the keel up. She sails on true and apparent wind, heels to the breeze, leans into her turns and slows as she pinches the wind — yet glides smoothly on any region, because she never relies on the region's physics engine.

Take her helm with the arrow keys, typed commands, or the worn four-panel Sail HUD. Up to four crew can come aboard, each with a full menu of poses on deck and below.

The Sailing Engine

She sails on the wind — smoothly

Rocinante's “glide” engine works out every move from real sailing sums — true wind, apparent wind, point of sail, trim, heel and leeway — then hands it to your viewer as one smooth glide. No bouncing, no jitter, and it behaves the same on BulletSim or ubODE regions.

How she sails

⚓ Wind & speed

  • Speed builds and fades over about 10 seconds, like a heavy cruiser.
  • Pinching slows her rather than stopping her: drive fades between 34° and 22° apparent wind.
  • About 8 kn at 45° off the wind, 6 kn at 39°, 4 kn at 33° (in 18 kn of breeze).
  • In irons when pointed straight into the wind.
  • Slight sideways drift (about 5° of leeway) while moving.
How she moves

↻ Heel & steering

  • Heels away from the wind (up to 25°) and leans into turns; comes upright gradually.
  • Turn rate grows with speed — about 6°/s slow, 11.5°/s at full speed.
  • A held arrow key keeps her circling as long as you hold it.
  • Let go and she carries on turning for about 3 seconds.
  • Sheet by arrow keys: the longer you hold, the more it moves (10° a second).
Helping hands

✦ Autopilot

  • HOLD keeps her current heading; steering by hand cancels it.
  • STEER to any of 16 compass points or a bearing — she turns there and holds it.
  • A course into the wind is sailed as close as she can, and she tells you so.
  • COURSE +5 / −5 nudges the held course.
  • TRIM sets the sheet for green trim continuously.
  • TACK goes to the same angle on the other side — or gybes if the wind is behind — and reports “Maneuver completed” only when she's really there.
Navigation

⚠ Safety at sea

  • Checks the depth along her path; stops before grounding (2.6 m draft + 0.3 m spare).
  • Warns about 15 seconds ahead of shallows or the edge of the world, with an alarm sound.
  • Sails across region borders and re-plans on the other side.
  • why explains what she's doing: heading, wind, settling speed, planned distance, depth under the keel.

Reading the trim

The text above the boat changes colour with your trim. Mis-trim costs speed gradually — no sudden cliffs — and the main and jib flap audibly until you get it right.

Green — optimum, sails silent
Yellow — a bit loose
Red — far too loose
Cyan — too tight

▲ Sails & rigging

  • RAISE hoists main and jib together and stows the fenders.
  • LOWER drops all sail; she drifts to a gentle stop.
  • Main, jib and boom swing to the sheet on the correct side for each tack.
  • Sheet range 5°–80°, set by keys, by number or by step.
  • Ruritania sail livery on both tacks and when flapping.

◉ Spinnaker

  • Hoist once the sheet is past 50° — it replaces the jib.
  • Trim ±3° with PgUp / PgDn.
  • GYBE swaps the pole side.
  • Adds speed off the wind.

⚙ Motor

  • MOTOR drops the sails and starts the engine.
  • Throttle −10 astern to +10 ahead; about 8 kn ahead, half speed astern.
  • Propeller spins with the throttle, the right way astern, and stops with the engine.
  • Engine sound follows the throttle; ENGINE OFF stops without mooring.
  • MOOR stops everything and puts the fenders out; standing up from the helm moors her too.
The Sail HUD

Drive her with a click

A worn, four-panel brushed-steel HUD drives the whole boat. Every lamp, needle and dial follows the boat's own live report, so it always shows what she is really doing — even when you type a command instead of clicking.

The Rocinante Sail HUD: title bar, helm pad with sheet and throttle arcs and compass buttons, wind dial with depth and knots displays, and button strip
Moored: MOOR glows red, CHASE camera lit, depth 19 m.

Title bar always on screen

  • CURTAINS, LIGHTS, FENDERS — each lamp lit when open, on or out.
  • HORN — sounds the ship's horn; its lamp flashes.
  • SHOW & HIDE — tucks away the three panels below; remembered through resets.
  • HUD — silent running: no text above the boat, no chat messages.

Helm pad sheet, throttle and steering

  • SAIL lamp raises or lowers the sails; MOTOR lamp starts or stops the engine.
  • Blue arc: click anywhere to set the sheet (5–80°). Red arc: set the throttle (−10 to +10).
  • Ring arrows: hold left or right to steer like the arrow keys; up and down nudge the sheet or throttle.
  • Eight compass buttons (N to NW): she turns to that course and holds it — and the button lights.

Wind dial wind, heading, depth, speed

  • Click a compass badge to set wind direction; click a Beaufort-coloured segment for speed (8, 11, 15, 18, 21, 25 kn).
  • The steel boat disc turns to her heading; the red arrow and marker show the wind.
  • LCD windows: DEPTH in metres (every 2 s, always on) and KNOTS of boat speed.

Button strip sail handling and cameras

  • SPIN, HOLD, TRIM with lamps; GYBE and TACK flash when pressed.
  • MOOR glows red while she's moored.
  • Cameras CHASE, SIDE, BOW, MAST, with a lamp on the active view.

Four camera views, no jitter

CHASE is an over-the-shoulder view, set as soon as you take the helm. BOW starts ahead of her bow and SIDE off her starboard beam; both sweep round and climb to look down on her from behind. MAST looks straight down on the deck from aloft.

Every view is moved by your viewer, not by a timer, so they stay smooth under way — and they work moored, too.

A chart that knows where she is

On the chart table, beside the depth sounder and the VHF, lies a chart of the region she’s sailing in — the real region map, lit so you can read it day or night. A red “you are here” pin stands on it and creeps across the chart as she sails, so you can watch the course she’s making good, land and channels all around.

Sail across a region border and the chart changes by itself: the new region’s map comes up and the pin jumps to her place on it. It works on large regions too, not just the standard 256 m square.

Sounds, lights & a cabin to live in

♫ Sounds

  • Ship's horn on demand.
  • Shallow-water and edge-of-the-world alarm.
  • Main and jib flap when the trim isn't right; silent in green.
  • Wake water rushing past, louder as she speeds up.
  • Engine start and running sounds that follow the throttle.

☀ Lights

  • Navigation lights and spotlight.
  • A white masthead light.
  • Warm glow from both TV screens.
  • Lit wind display.
  • All on or off with one button.

⌂ Below deck

  • Galley and saloon table, laid for two.
  • Forward and aft sleeping cabins.
  • Bathroom with shower and curtains.
  • Two TVs, a live chart table and a kettle.
  • Solid decks and cabins to walk on, under way or moored.

Silent running

Prefer a quiet sail? Press HUD on the title bar (or say hud off) and the text above the boat and her chat messages fall silent. Warnings still sound by alarm, and help and why still answer when you ask. Your choice is remembered through mooring and resets.

The Crew
